At Royal Ontario Academy, some courses require students to complete a prerequisite before enrolling in the next level of a subject. A prerequisite is a course that must be successfully completed to ensure students have the foundational knowledge needed to progress. Students enrolling in courses with prerequisites are required to demonstrate that they meet the Ontario Ministry of Education standards. This is done by submitting an official Ontario Student Transcript or final report card as evidence of the required course completion.

For students with non-traditional educational backgrounds or unique circumstances, we offer the option of applying for a Prerequisite Waiver. This allows students to enrol in a course without completing the listed prerequisite, provided they can demonstrate equivalent learning or experience. A waiver may be applicable in the following scenarios:

• Mature students who attended an Ontario high school prior to September 2000.
• Students who have never attended an Ontario high school.
• Students who have completed college or university courses.
• Individuals with relevant work-related experience.

To apply for a waiver, students must submit a Prerequisite Waiver Application along with supporting documentation. Our Principal will review the materials to ensure the student has covered similar topics to those included in the Ontario curriculum. If approved, the student will be granted a waiver, allowing them to enrol in their chosen course.  We strive to make the process straightforward, ensuring that our students can begin their courses as quickly as possible. This review process typically takes only a few days.
